The Clerk/ Phlebotomy Technician Position has dual duties, serving as Phlebotomy Tech and Clerk for BMH Laboratory. The Clerk/ Phlebotomy Technician Position has a central role in the workflow of the entire Laboratory. The Clerk function includes greeting patients and customers, as well as performing required processing or directing them to the appropriate/different areas. This role also includes processing orders, full review of tests, clarification when necessary, research into uncommonly ordered tests (contacting reference laboratory to obtain proper ordering codes, specimen requirements and billing information). Also includes review of patient demographics and updating data fields so reports are sent to the proper locations and physicians. Must handle continuous calls coming into the department in a courteous and responsible manner, troubleshoot problems or complaints, and refer when appropriate. Responsible for handling and processing all outpatient reports, faxing results, calling results when necessary, receiving and processing faxes. Works closely with all departments in the Laboratory and interacts with all staff.
A Phlebotomy Tech possesses knowledge of phlebotomy procedures and assumes responsibility for performing venipuncture, capillary draws, and related procedures on diverse patient age groups under the policies and procedures established by the Hospital and the Department. Develops technical skills and knowledge of principles, techniques, and equipment used to collect blood specimens for a variety of laboratory tests from diverse patient age groups, at different collection sites, for daily "Stat," Timed and Routine test orders. Have basic knowledge, skills and proficiency to use computers and computer-related technology. Assumes on-going development of LIS skills to perform tasks related to ordering, receiving or logging in specimens, follow up on unavailable specimens; relaying patient laboratory test information and managing data through appropriate computer programs. Maintain phlebotomy trays/carts, work stations and equipment in a sanitary and properly supplied condition at all times. Requisition, replenish and update supplies. Understands and performs various special or reference lab test procedures. Maintains a high quality phlebotomy patient experience and supports the Dept. of Laboratory Medicine Quality Control/Assurance Program. Participate in laboratory continuing education program. The Clerk/Phlebotomy Tech plays an important role representing the Laboratory by being both professional and caring to the patient and hospital staff needs. Responds to changes in work staffing schedule as necessary. May be required to work different shifts, on weekends or holidays. Incumbent is expected to perform other similar and related duties as assigned. Management has the right to change or add job responsibilities at any time.
High school diploma strongly preferred. Copy of highest degree earned (diploma) or transcripts is required. Experience preferred. (8-2015)
