PURPOSE OF JOB

 

The Senior Manager, Media position leads and develops the strategy, execution and analysis of media campaigns that build the Staples brand while driving profit and sales. Ownership of comms planning is a key function of this role and guiding the team of direct reports. In partnership with external agencies, Customer Insights and digital media teammates, the development of fully integrated plans that span the customer journey will be key for delivering positive results.

 

There is supervision of the team that owns planning and buying responsibilities for all offline media vehicles, including national and local video and audio, out-of-home and print. Management of external agencies is also a component of the role.

 

Innovation is key to constantly explore, test and roll out new media opportunities to help improve Staples ROI and brand metrics.  Collaboration across internal business partners and external agencies will be priority for staying current on media trends and the changing attitudes and behaviors of all our target segments. Budget management responsibility for managing an advertising budget in excess of $100MM. 

 

The position oversees the growth and development of a 2-person team and reports into the Director, Media & Marketing Operations. 

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

STRATEGY AND PLANNING

  • Manage the development and execution of offline plans including collaboration across multiple teams re: the communications planning and integrated media strategy. 
  • Partner with Customer Insights to flow customer-centric strategies through media programs.
  • Collaborate across marketing team members to create dynamic and unconventional added value programs that deliver on overall marketing objectives, maximize efficiencies and drive traffic and sales.
  • Prioritize initiatives to optimize channels that drive sales and profit

MARKETING MANAGEMENT

  • Oversee and build campaigns that drive results – on strategy, on time, and on budget
  • Collaboration and management of external agencies

MARKETING EXECUTION

  • Oversee execution of approved offline media plans
  • Communicate and collaborate across all areas: research to planning to reporting
  • Oversee budget management for all offline channels with direct reports, Marketing colleagues, and Finance team

KNOWLEDGE / SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • 8-10 years of media planning experience, either at another retailer or advertising/media agency
  • Strategic thinker with thorough knowledge of offline and online media
  • Able to demonstrate excellent negotiation skills, innovative thinking and ability to work in fast paced retail environment
  • Detail oriented, highly organized individual with demonstrated problem solving abilities and project management skills, including working in cross-functional teams
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and experience managing and motivating teams
  • Demonstrated analytical skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office applications
