The Sherwin-Williams Company is seeking a Senior R&D Engineer in Cleveland, Ohio.

 

This position will provide engineering support to BTC functions.  Responsible for the development, installation, and optimization of formulas, processing improvements, and recommendations while maintaining safe operation of all equipment.  Use structured problem solving and statistical techniques for the development and improvement efforts.  Facilitate and lead large/division level programs and projects/teams to ensure the successful completion of project objectives while managing improvement programs.  Provide support, method development, and timely and accurate solutions to multiple complex problems using considerable technical expertise and experience.   Continue to develop one or more areas of recognizable technical expertise in the group or within the company.  Lead multiple $100K projects annually or projects of difficult complexity.  Work independently on projects and train/mentor group members.  Lead critical projects and act as a Project Manager. Lead efforts on divisional strategic projects. Provide engineering support as needed. Use statistical analysis for problem solving and/or method development. Work on continuous improvement and improving quality and efficiency. Develop new methods and processes. Work towards becoming an expert in a particular area.  Expand leadership skills. Expand relationships and collaborative partners. Serve as a technical contact for outside groups or divisions. Leverage technical knowledge to other Engineers, other groups/divisions. Optimize formulations, equipment, and process steps. Travel to plants for new product scale-ups or existing product troubleshooting. Operate pilot plant equipment. Lead BTC scale-up/pilots of new formulas. Implement recommendations and improvements on projects. Coordinate production at manufacturers. Troubleshoot new formulas. Provide guidance on cycle times and process cost considerations. Use safe process techniques and good housekeeping. Coordinate activities and mentor lower level Engineers. Investigate and resolve plant issues. Use ARC (Accelerated Root Cause) process. Identify new equipment needs for projects. Make external contacts and leverage their expertise. Design process studies. Identify and overcome potential obstacles to meet customer timelines. Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve complex issues.

 

 

Basic Qualifications:

- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must have a BS/BA in Chemistry/Engineering or a BS/BA (non-chemistry) plus 2 semesters of General Chemistry and 2 semesters of Organic Chemistry                                                         
- 5 years of experience in job offered; or coatings based research and development and production or related role
- Demonstrated experience must include: improving existing coatings formulations and processing for both quality and cost efficiency; working in a production environment supporting new products and process improvements; dispersion concepts; raw materials and associated alternates used in coatings; DMAIC Six Sigma process; statistical design of experiments.
