Assistant Buyer

Position Summary:

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Supports the Buyer in all facets of product assortment, financial planning, and vendor partnerships in accordance with the sales, margin, turnover and flow goals of an assigned division.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES merchandising

  • Assists Buyer with product assortment, pricing, and merchandising strategies reflecting goals based on historic data, current trends and future forecasts. Takes ownership of department category or classification.
  • Determines advertising placement and proof copy to ensure desired outcome. Plans special promotional events. Ensures ad merchandise arrives in stores or fulfillment centers before ad dates and follows up with vendors and distribution centers to track ad prep and sales results.
  • Participates in recommending, setting, and approving product-pricing strategies to achieve specific margin objectives and executes exit strategies on slow selling items, ad rotation, pricing compliance.
  • Proof - Make sure all pricing and pictures are correct. Proofing process (layout through final blueline) - review for accuracy, facilitate buying office review, ensure changes are business appropriate and in accordance with compliance policies.
  • Assists with negotiating product costs, terms, and shipping/returns issues

business partner management

  • Primary liaison with Merchandise Presentation on in store or online execution and strategies.
  • Assists Buyer in developing and maintaining vendor partnerships.
  • Acts as a liaison between merchandising, distribution center and stores in an effort to track shipments and floor purchase orders.

inventory management

  • Analyzes business trends and opportunities by identifying and maximizing key items via test strategies. Assists with execution of short term buying plans based on open-to-buy dollars and long term strategies.
  • Reviews inventory regularly including merchandise order. Maintains current data on sales and fashion trends to plan future purchases. Assists with seasonal presentation to upper management.

QUALIFICATIONS

required

  • 2 - 3 years in Retail Merchandising, Business Administration, and/or marketing or related area.
  • Strong negotiation skills and group presentation skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills sufficient to communicate credibly and effectively at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and maintain strict deadlines.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and interact effectively with others.

preferred

  • 1 - 3 years of buying responsibility with a major retailer.
  • Bachelor's Degree.

special requirements

  • Ability to travel periodically.

ADDENDUMS E-Commerce Assistant Buyer

  • Identify Web Exclusive opportunities and partner with Buyer to develop and execute the strategy.
  • Partner with vendors, Product Development and brick & mortar Merchants to transfer key in-store strategies to an online presence.
  • Key partner to making fulfillment decisions (EFC, Direct Ship, etc.)
  • Work closely with Web Merchandise Presentation team to develop online best-in-class presentation.
  • Responsible for a broader scope regarding advertising process, serving multiple divisions and cross-functional partnerships.
